About Tradition,

Asking some young Mormons, who came in Romania to make proselytes, why the Romanians do not adopt their religion, although they usually are keen on anything coming from USA, the Mormons answered that in Romania the tradition is very strong. It would be well to be true, but I do not think so. On the contrary, in my opinion, the tradition is too weak in the time being, but I noticed their point of view about tradition generally. They consider the tradition as a negative thing, something making the man to be not only conservative, but retrograde, even backward.

In a sense, they are right if we look that world is in a permanent change, and think only how much a society is opened to the new. But, on the other hand, the tradition is that in which the values, the conceptions and our faiths fix themselves. Common people assimilate high conceptions just by the customs, which had been generates by these conceptions and conveyed to them through the generations. They do not usually think to some deep philosophy and sometimes have not the intellectual ability to do it, but assimilate the ideas - and specially their morale consequences - being respectful of the tradition. The renunciation without discernment at some customs for some new ones may be not a step forward, but the deny of the own identity, or - worse than it - the loss of some important moral norms. In the last analysis, the tradition is another word for the civilisation. We are civilised as we have and preserve a tradition. The change happens in time, and preferably in a wise way.

The great faiths have assumed people's traditions and gave them some religious signification. To oppose yourself to the tradition is not only a foolishness, but also a sign of the lack of the civilisation. (The Russian communists tried to do it.) It is interesting to notice that, in the name of the civilisation - and sometimes even of the faith - people did the most awful evils: crusades, the extermination of the natives from the colonies, the Inquisition, etc., etc. They created and still keep the confusion between civilisation and economic power, putting the equality sign between civilisation and technology. But this is the effect of the politics. To be civilised means to be respectful of your fellow people, of the tradition of the places.

Trying to impose to others your own customs denotes not a superior civilisation, but just the lack of any civilisation. One says that you must accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue. Some people were only pigeons so far.

Rome was not build in a day.

Today, a former neighbour woman visited my wife, together with her son, a worker, with no much education, as his parents have separated many years ago. Hearing that I have set parquet by myself in my living room, he suddenly became full of admiration. Anything else I ever did in my life, everything I have done before on intellectual plan does not matter for him. Writing, painting, without speaking about my main profession, was nothing in his mind. A manual labour was all that he considers being worth enough to record in my credit.

You have to smell the roses too and take time to enjoy life

After USA, more countries worry that some of their soldiers, who took part in the war in Yugoslavia, fall ill with leukaemia, as they stayed near missiles with some charge of weak radioactive uranium, or manipulated them, but nobody care of the Yugoslav people, who was bombarded with such missiles. This reminds me one of the Plutarch's remarks: when children throw stones at frogs, by playing, the frogs do not die by playing, but really.

I am sorry I had to associate the Yugoslav people with the frogs and to raise the military men up to the level of some innocent, because of the ignorance, youth. It is unjust.

Hence one may see that the morality seems to be better preserved in the animal kingdom than in that we name civilised, but prove to be only meanly.

We must recognise there were some advantages. Among them, from the recently invented PENTIUM 1, we have reached to PENTIUM 4 in only a few years, even if some missiles failed not only the target, but also the country and fell in Bulgaria.

But the mankind toes ahead.

Kυnigsberg, the town where Immanuel Kant lived, has now only 1 % German inhabitants. More then 90% are Russians. Its name is Kaliningrad, after the name of one of the first great Bolsheviks, Kalinin ("grad" means town). There is not in the world a town with Kant's name.

•  Any instrument when dropped will roll into the least accessible corner.

•  Any circuit design must contain at least one part which is obsolete, two parts which are unobtainable and three parts which are still under development.

Meanwhile, the sun moved a little and the scene from the glass case has changed. The woman's head disappeared and the man seems to swoops upon the woman to help her.

I hope I am not dreaming. What would be the time? Now, I did not fall asleep, but, going to the ... would be a wise decision. Prudence is the matter of wise in a well-known saying.

As it was expected, few Americans know the expression "Cyrillic alphabet". They know only that the Russians use a different alphabet, belong of Christian Orthodox faith and, as a consequence, they thing that Cyrillic and the Orthodoxy came from Moscow. A rougher error would be hard to find. In reality, Cyril was born in Tessalonika (Greece), then part of Byzantine Empire, and lived between 827 and 869. At that time Russia does not exist at all. The Byzantine Empire instead, used to be the most powerful Christian center in the world and the single educated area from the Europe. It was the place where, during 1000 years, people preserved, next door to the darkness of the occidental Middle Edge, the value of the Hellenism and Roman civilization, up till the dawn of the Renaissance. The Renaissance itself was in a great measure the creation of the Byzantium, as the intellectuals from Constantinopole are those who, for fear of Turkish, took refuge in Italy, the ideal place for remake antic traditions. Together with his brother, Methodius, Cyril preached the Christianity in Moravia (now the eastern region of Czech Republic), among the people speaking a Slav language. For them he invented the alphabet with his name and translated the books of the New Testament. For Russian both Christianity and Cyrillic alphabet have come much later, from west toward east. Even in Ukraine, much to west than Moscow, in Kiev, the famous Pecerskaia Monastery has become famous thanks to Petru Movila, a Romanian bishop. Russia's development started much later and it was the communist propaganda that exaggerated its role. Cyril died in Rome.

Do not expect this book to be one of travel notes. There are lacking descriptions of placed, portrayals of characters, or exciting adventures. Not entirely, because the decision to write was occasioned by my second journey in USA, and many notes were put down just during those long American roads. Oh, yes, the thought flies away while the plane, bus, or train carries us over miles and miles, so it is quite difficult to restrain yourself from not writing down such thoughts. That's why this is more a book of travel thoughts than one of travel adventures.

The Americans and we, or inversely.

Speaking about the Americans, we speak about the difference between them and we. Consequently, willing or not, we speak equally about us. It all depends on the point of view. We can say that, looking at other people, we finally discover ourselves. But, who are we, and who am I? I am a Romanian; namely I am from Romania. Do you know where is it? Do not take the map out. Maps could be wrong. The Americans said it for excusing themselves when some rockets missed their targets during the war in Kosovo. Otherwise, rockets are very precise, they say, even if some of them fell in Bulgaria. Bulgaria is another country, not another target, but it does not matter for a great cause. By the way, Bulgaria is our southern neighbor, on the other side of Danube.

But, there is a simpler way to learn where Romania is. Do you know Gabriela Sabo, the athlete girl? Or, maybe, Nadia Comaneci, the gymnast. Her coach... is now the trainer of USA team. All of them are from Romania. Oh, you do not like sports; you are a fan of arts. In this case, you surely heard about Brancusi, Ionesco, Enesco, and too many others. Dracula is from Romania as well. He was never born, but in a writer's mind. Dracula's Castle instead, is a real tourist's attraction at 20 miles away from the town where I live. If you know none of them, surely you are a deep believer. Then, you have to know where Andrew, the Apostle, Peter's elder brother, preached. Well, it is there where Romania is. You guess it is somewhere in Europe, even if the occidental Europeans do not want us in European Union. To be more exactly, Romania is at an equal distance face to East and West Europe's extremities, a quarter face to south and three-quarters face to north one.

Now, you already know too much. Why the occidentals do not want us in EU? Well, after almost 50 years of Soviet influence, we look different but, if we need other 50 years for recovering, I am afraid this EU will not be, any longer. Speaking of the former Soviet Union, Romanian language enables us to make a play of words: USA is the other SU. (Do not try to understand how; it is our language.) The reciprocal is not possible.

Well, let's discover the other SU. After 50 years, we may do it.

Dear Frank,

Thank you for catching my eye to that article. You are lucky for not reading

it entirely. The article is an infamy but, of course, you are not guilty for

it, so that I thank you again for letting me know about it.

I am not content with the activity of nowadays and former our governments

and consider Ceausescu was an imbecile. That's why you do not expect me to

be an ardent or passionate patriot. On the contrary, if you want someone to

accuse, I am the man. Unfortunately, that article contains so many

inaccurate facts and the presentation is too tendentious, that I cannot

accept it. Only some ignorant could believe the author. It is enough to cast

a glance at an atlas to learn where Romania is for see that the author is an

impostor and a plotter. Who pays him? Whose interests he serves? It would be

interesting to learn.

I am trying to explain.

1. The word "Romm" belongs to Gypsies' language and it is gypsies who want

us to use it. That's why the author is supposed to be himself a gypsy.

Everywhere in Europe except England, people use the word "gitan" with small

variations: gitano, zigan, cingaro, zigouner, etc. That's why the author

needs to explain the meaning of this word, and he did it in the second

phrase. But afterwards, using frequently this word next to Romania, he

induces in reader's mind an automatism, a reflex association of these two

words, as if Romania would be gypsies' country. Why? In Romania there are

not more gypsies than in other European countries. Gypsies are an

international nation; they still migrate where is better. {Unfortunately for

us, Romania is a poor country now (a pity), and gypsies are the first who

leave (in every evil there is a good)}.

2. The assertion about gypsy children in orphanages is an outrageous lie.

Gypsies do not abandon their children; on the contrary, they steal children

in order to use them for begging. There were not gypsies in orphanages,

either now, or in the past.

3. It is true that, in 1990, the journalists discovered several orphanages

for degenerated children offering them wretch conditions. Also, it is true

that during communist regime, as long as we all had very bad conditions,

those orphanages were completely forgotten. It is not an excuse but starting

from it, occidental media wrote a lot about it, as if Romania was a country

of degenerated children. Degenerated people are over all in the world. Every

country has more or less of them. You can see them in USA from New York to

Santa Monica sleeping on the streets. Till 1989, just because of our

poverty, there was not here drugs, AIDS, etc. We used to try in poverty but

with natural food. That's why there were not poor people in the streets of

out towns. (They started to appear nowadays thanks to occidental help in

drugs, corruption, etc.)

4. The assertions about Ceausescu's racial intentions are aberrant

fallacies. As I already said, he was a simple imbecile. It is in fashion now

to speak about one's dictatorship in order to protect some occidental

politicians with socialist or communist ideals. Ceausescu's dictatorship

already became a legend. The true is that communist system produces

dictatorship. Every former communist country had its dictators greater or

5. The author of the article wants to provoke people's compassion with any

means, and imagine all kind of aberrations. He provoked me because he

invoked Romania, but he could take any other country.

Again, I thank you for letting me know about that article. I shall show it

to my Romanian friends for informing then about what people speak about us.

Best wishes,

Soon, two years will be since I retired, and many things are odd enough. For example, I cannot grow out myself of the habit of learning. Nobody asks me, but I want to learn how to write better html files, I want to read more books than I can do, write essays or travel notes, paint, and a lot of other things. Of course, I have not enough time for all these. People also have odd behaviour. (Not all of them.) Some of my former fellow workers, not just friends, have begun to love me surprisingly. One of them offers his services, another one kisses my every time when we meet each other by chance, etc. That' s probably so because, at old age, they want to wash away their sins. There is a fellow has recently got the habit of going to the church every Sunday. After the service, he usually calls me for a chat. Probably, during the religion service, he thinks to his main sins. I am speaking ill of him now (my sin) but - as a matter of fact - I appreciate when people become better. There are others instead, who have almost forgotten me. Life is interesting.

For the moment, the Americans are like poker gamblers, who - even if they have bad cards - take the liberty of overbidding beyond the adversaries' Monday, 08 February 1999possibilities, in order to eliminate them in this way. I want to say that American politicians' solutions are not always the best, but they always win.

Every nation has his civilisation, moral rules, customs, legends, mentalities, etc. In most cases, their civilisation is close linked with a religion early from its history. For common people, moral rules have roots just in their religion. Often the religion has adapted itself to local customs. The proof is that the same religion has different feasts and saints for different nations. For example, we have St. Ilie, who is unknown for other nations. Or, their importance is different. For example, St. Andrew is more important for Romanian people because it is the apostle Andrew who wandered as far as the South of Romania and Christianised people. Trying to change nation's religion means to destroy their morality, to take away the support of all their moral rules.

I started to learn English early in 1959, when this idea used to seem nonsense in Romania. We have not even the possibility to listen western broadcasts. Hopping to talk in English was at least absurd. Later on, this dream happened to be profitable but most of my dreams remained dreams, therefore useless. I am a dreamer.

Nobody can take away your past. It is always there, when you want and when you do not. You close your eyes and see it.

Tests may be different; only the good taste is common.

After 1989, Romania and occidental great international institutes like International Monetary Found, World Bank, and many others, have concluded many commercial and just political agreements. Most of them are advantageous for the Romanians signatories of them but disastrously for Romanian people. I know exactly who they are: some swindlers. What must I think about the occidental representatives?
